New methods to assess the cocktail effect (engelska) The combined effects of several chemicals on the environment are referred to cocktail effects. In our project, the cocktail effect is investigated by testing chemicals as mixtures instead of single compounds. To do so we use water flea Daphnia magna as test organism. |

Lab-on chip devices: Creating a laboratory in the palm of your hand (engelska) The objective of this talk is to introduce lab-on chip technology and to show how it is possible to miniaturize an entire laboratory into an integrated system of just a few centimeters. Some examples of the used technologies to manufacture them will be exposed (3d printing, laser writing, micro milling, et c.). Moreover, different applications will be showed, highlighting their advantages in some fields as clinical diagnostics (point-of-care devices for decentralized screening and follow-up of patients) or environmental control (water quality management in rivers, caves, mines or soils). Emphasis will be placed on ease of use (even for non−trained personnel) and the low waste production, something interesting for limited resources environments. |

Photosynthesis and Quantumchemistry - From Light to Energy (engelska) Photosynthesis produces oxygen and is therefore essential to us humans. This talk will discuss how the molecular details of a key player in photosynthesis - photosystem II - can be studied using computational techniques. |
B3 |
Breathe! - How Complex I Pumps Protons (engelska) This presentation will be about how cell respiration works! We will discuss the molecular mechanism of respiratory complex I and how it can be elucidated using computational chemistry. |
B4 |
Wellness and work-life balance for overworked bacteria (engelska) This presentation will be about prevention of stress caused by the inclusion body formation in bacteria. Recombinant protein-producing bacteria often produce too much of the protein which leads to misfolding and accumulation in the inclusion bodies. Prevention of this is important since they are toxic. Synthetic biology tools can be used to detect them in an early phase and stop their accumulation. |
B5 |
Using antibiotics to better select the bacteria we want I will talk about making bacteria use antibiotics more efficiently and how that could affect industry. I will also talk about how I ended up where I am (chemistry wise). |
B6 |
How lipids can be used as biological delivery vehicles How to use the molecules in your body to make, protect and deliver nanomedicines and what they look like. |

Bioethanol to chemicals (engelska) Biomass is a carbon source from which a variety of products such as bioethanol are obtained. Bioethanol is an intermediary for obtaining different biofuels and chemicals and here you will learn more about this. |

Exploring three-dimensional atomic arrangement of nanosized crystals with electron diffraction (engelska) The properties of materials are determined by their crystal structures. X-ray diffraction is currently the most important technique for determination of 3D atomic structures but requires large crystals which are often difficult to obtain. Electrons, similar to X-rays and neutrons, are powerful source for diffraction experiments. Due to the strong interaction between electrons and materials, even nanosized crystal can have enough signal when illuminated by electrons. This enables structure determination of materials that are too small for conventional X-ray diffraction. This technique enables high-throughput phase analysis for a large number of nanosized crystals, which brings up many potential applications. |

Harnessing the Power of the Sun to make Medicines (engelska) A catalyst is a substance that increases the rate of a chemical reaction, without being used up. In our research, we use catalysts that can absorb light and enter a higher energy excited state. The catalyst can then pass this energy off to other molecules allowing them to engage in reactions they otherwise could not. We then use these excited molecules (reactive intermediates) to construct complex molecules that can be used in medicine. |

Computational chemistry: Discovering new chemistry without a laboratory (engelska) When imagining chemists, we often think of people in white lab coats mixing chemicals together in a laboratory. But there is a different way of doing chemistry. One that can be done using only an office and a powerful computer. In this talk, I will introduce the field of computational chemistry and give a brief demonstration of its capabilities |

Photo and electrocatalysis as tools towards sustainable development (engelska) Catalysis is an important tool towards not only milder and more effective reactions, but also towards the contribution of greener approaches. To achieve these goals, we have employed systems which can use light or electricity as energy sources, instead of high temperature or pressure. |

The use of Green Chemistry to address key issues in Organic Chemistry (engelska) With an ever-expanding global population, the importance of organic chemistry has grown exponentially as we can find it in a number of industries such as pharmaceuticals and agrochemical all the way to text-tiles. However, the existential crisis posed by climate change continues to decimate our planet and thus, it is vital that we bring organic chemistry into the 21st century! Green chemistry as a research field has evolved naturally over the last few decades to tackle these exact problems. In this talk, I will introduce the 12 green principles and discuss some case-studies of how certain chemical reactions have been made greener within field of organic synthetic chemistry. |

Sweet NMR - Exploring the Molecular Behavior of Carbohydrates by NMR Spectroscopy (engelska) This presentation will include a short introduction to carbohydrates and some basic principals of NMR spectroscopy. Afterwards it will be shown how NMR spectroscopy can be used to study the 3-dimensional structure of carbohydrates in solution and. A part about computer simulations (molecular dynamics simulations) of such systems can be included, if so wished. |
